Before I dive into a "quick" update, take a look at what I found today while dusting off my SLR!
Somehow with two kids, life seems to be whizzing by full throttle. I say that every time, but... seriously. enough said.
What-we've-been-up-to updates:
1) Had a few bad-parenting incidents with minimal consequences, however they are definite lessons learned. Emilia almost drowned in one of the incidents due to mis-communication between Ryan and I while watching her in a kid-height wadding pool. She was 3-4 feet away from me. I thought Ryan was watching both kids; Ryan thought I was watching her. I turned away to take my shirt off for a few seconds. Turned around and found Emilia under water, struggling right next to me. Scary and erie moment. People all around, kid is upside-down and sunken in shallow water, it was really quiet. Luckily it was only a few seconds. I scooped her up right away and she started crying hard. I still have images of the moment in my head.. and Emilia occasionally mentions being under water. Even after that traumatic incident, she was still upset when we had to leave the pool.
2) Another bad-parenting incident was during a dinner outing with friends. Ryan and the kids arrived at the place first and I showed up a little after them. When Emilia saw me, she ran off the sidewalk, into the parking lot, and right up to greet me. No moving cars, but I've heard horror stories of exact same thing happening to other kids. We teach her time and time again not to go into the street where there are cars, so this let us know that when the chance occurrence showed up, it was a fail. This is something we still need to work on and I'm thinking of ways on how to ensure this doesn't happen again. Might have to do a controlled stage-up of this and have a friend in a car do a scary, loud honk at her to engrain a lesson. I dunno.. anybody have ideas?
3) Geez.. so it sounds like we're bad parents, but as you can see this is why we're really bad on updating now. Catching up on things is not so simple. It is not only about getting the daily routine and chores done, but its also about constant re-enforcement of pretty much everything now. Engraining vital, basic, life lessons at every chance we get because she is really becoming her own little person with her own curious mind. These kiddies.. they're growing up faster than I expect and we're always playing catch up in educating them about life's safety and quirks. Change is coming as we figure things out.
4) Liam is almost not a baby anymore! When did that happen?! He's at the stage where he confidently pulls himself up on anything within reach and stands up and walks assisted. It will not be too long before he becomes a full fledge toddler.
5) Ryan is non-existent. That is, he is so buried in work (real work) that he is living and breathing engineering stuff. Poor guy needs more sleep, but he's still managing to get the daily chores done, have quality-kids time, and occasionally get in a run here and there. Even with just a couple of runs, I'm pretty sure he's in decent enough shape to handle the zombie race. Any one going to bet if he'll turn into a zombie or not?
6) The deck has been on hold for a bit obviously. But prior to this, Ryan did manage to remove our fire place and close it off. Yah to more space! That extra few square feet really does make a difference!
6) I am swamped at work. In fact, the FGPA project I mentioned before, which I was told I had plenty of time to work on, has somehow ramped into "We need this now. we're already late." Go figure. Typical engineering.
7) My hamstring/glut injury is still very much painful, 5+ months now from original injury. I have been unable to exercise. I am seeing an Active Release guy and Physical Therapy which have identified how I sustained the injury, but have not been able to have a speedy recover that I hoped for. I foresee me turning in a zombie for the zombie race. I only hope to be able to complete the 5K and do all the obstacles.
8) It's been 11 months now of fiddling around with different diets, foods, etc. It takes a while to really nail down what works and what doesn't and what is sustainable as a way of life. The whole family is eating healthier than ever before. I have tons of yummy and healthy recipes from breakfast to entrees to desserts and snacks. It's funny because a lot of people think eating healthy is limiting, but after doing so much research and experimenting with foods, I find it is the opposite. It is an expansion of the eating palette because there is an incorporation of so much more foods that are new to us. Ryan's lost 6 pounds (not intentionally) and I weigh less than I did before being preggers with Emilia (without being able to exercise!).
All in all, summer came and went.. we never even made it to the beach. Not once. So forget catching up. We're just going to jump ahead. I'm already looking forward to fall and autumn fun. Already been cooking up pumpkin recipes. Here's a shot of what Emilia and I had for breakfast this morning, pumpkin pie oatmeal (almond milk, steel cut oats, pumpkin puree, pumpkin spice, scant of coconut palm sugar, and little sprinkle topping of pepitas pumpkin seed). mmnnn yum!
pumpkin pie spice. oh yes please.
